Wildcats Capture Third-Straight NEWA Dual Title

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team showed why it's the top team in the New England region on Sunday. The Wildcats rolled through three opponents to claim their third-straight NEWA Duals title at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

The trio of victories improved JWU's record to 17-4. It was the Wildcats seventh NEWA title, which is three more than the next closest school.

Johnson & Wales opened the event by beating Williams, 46-8, before dismantling Springfield, 48-0. The Wildcats won the title by beating #24 Coast Guard 31-9.

In the opening match against Williams, Johnson & Wales won the first six matches before the Ephs got a point. That run included pins from Christopher Caban at 133 pounds and the number one 149-pounder Da'mani Burns as well as tech falls from #2 Jay Albis at 125 pounds and 157-pounder Brady Robin.

Pins at 141 pounds by No. 7 Joe Ferinde and Burns pushed JWU's lead to 20-0 over Springfield. Thomas Grippi had a pin at 157 pounds and JWU wrapped up the match with consecutive pins by No. 5 Michael DiNardo at 197 pounds and Tommy Wrzesian at 285 pounds.

Back-to-back tech falls by Albis and third-ranked Bobby Jordan at 133 pounds staked the Wildcats to a 10-0 lead against Coast Guard. Burn posted his third pin of the day and Malik Rasheed got a win in sudden victory to push the lead to 22-0. Wrapping up the championship was a major decision by DiNardo and Wrzesien's second pin.

The Wildcats are on the road Saturday at the WPI quad to face the Engineers, Brockport State and NYU then come home to host the USC Wildcat Open on Sunday.
