BRISTOL, RI – A dozen Johnson & Wales University wrestlers were on the mat Sunday at the Scott Viera Open, hosted by Roger Williams University. Four Wildcats placed in the top five of their weight class.
One of the best performances came from freshman Tommy Wrzesien at 197 pounds. He placed third and all four of his wins were by pin, including one in 1:48 to beat George Tarwo of Springfield, the No. 8 wrestler in the region.
Also recording pins in all four of his wins was 133-pounder Gavin Cunningham. He put Kasim Khan of Wesleyan to the mat in 6:50 to take third.
The third third-place finish came from sophomore Mitchell Cook at 157 pounds. All five of his wins came in the consolation bracket, including a 12-4 major decision over Aaron Goldman of Wesleyan, who's ranked eighth in the region, to take third.
Senior Christopher Behen got four pins at 165 pounds to take fifth.
JWU is on the road January 13 when it travels to Coast Guard to take on the Bears, Norwich and Southern Maine.
