#7 Division II Wheeling Jesuits Tops #3 Johnson & Wales 23-13

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team was on center stage for the second year in a row at the historic Providence Performing Arts Center. The third-ranked Wildcats took on Wheeling Jesuit, ranked #7 in NCAA Division II, on Saturday with the Cardinals coming out on top, 23-13.

Wheeling Jesuit improved to 7-2 while Johnson & Wales dropped to 6-3.

The Cardinals captured the first bout of the night when Jared Donahue won a 4-2 decision over Joe Ferinde at 141 pounds. The Wildcats got on the board at 149 pounds when second-ranked Da'mani Burns pinned Tyler Alberts in just 1:33.

Riding time kept WJU's Dylan Taylor alive at 157 pounds, but Thomas Grippi hit a takedown then got four near fall points for the 12-6 victory. Seventh-ranked Keegan Driscoll defeated Adrian Gonzalez, 3-2, and Connor Craig tied the match at 9-9 when he beat Michael Gargano, 9-4, at 174 pounds.

Wheeling Jesuit grabbed its first lead, 12-9, when Aidan Paieuk topped Khamri Thomas, 2-0, at 184 pounds. Johnson & Wales got the lead back when fifth-ranked Michael DiNardo recorded the 13-1 major decision over Chase Logan.

Defending national champion Terrance Fanning defeated JWU's Jayson Gomez, 16-0, for the technical fall at 285 pounds. A third-period takedown and four-point near fall gave #7 Cole Laya a 9-6 win over #2 Jay Albis to secure the team victory. No. 4 Tyler Warner was a 7-2 winner over Bobby Jordan.

The Wildcats are back in action on January 4 when they travel to the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky.
