WORCESTER, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team had a dominant performance at the New Standard Invitational last weekend. Junior Da'mani Burns had a remarkable showing and it earned him the D3Wrestle.com national weekly award and the NEWA Wrestler of the Week honor.
He's the first JWU wrestler recognized by D3wrestle.com since Joey Gaccione in 2016. A native of Newburgh, NY, it's Burns' first NEWA award and third for Johnson & Wales this season. Kyle Kaiser from Roger Williams was named Rookie of the Week.
Burns won the 149-pound title in impressive fashion. He posted four pins, including one against second-ranked and 2018 NCAA finalist Brett Kallner in 2:50 during the semifinals. Burns topped fifth-ranked Stanley Bleich, 7-5, during overtime for the championship. His strong run moved him up to No. 2 in the national rankings at 149 pounds.
The third-ranked Wildcats are home on Friday to take on the Coast Guard Academy at 7 p.m.
