PORTLAND, Maine – A small contingency of Johnson & Wales University wrestlers competed at the Ted Reese Invitational, hosted by the University of Southern Maine. The Wildcats placed fifth with 54.5 points.
JWU had a pair of wrestlers in the top six at 133 pounds. Freshman Craig Sampson recorded a tech fall and pin in the consolation bracket before taking fourth. Classmate Antonio Simonelli placed sixth.
Junior Marvin Cunningham lost his first match of the day, but came back to record three pins in the wrestle backs to take sixth at 149 pounds.
Freshman Ryan DeVivo made his way into the semifinals of 174 pounds. A pin got him into the third-place match where he was defeated by Izaake Zuckerman.
Johnson & Wales returns home to face Coast Guard at 7 p.m. on Friday.
