Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener 14-4 at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – A slow start on offense cost the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team in its season opener at the Coast Guard Academy. The Wildcats dropped a 14-4 decision to the Bears on Wednesday.

Coast Guard Academy: 1-0
Johnson & Wales: 1-0

Marley Medina (JWU): 2 goals, 5 ground balls
Marcela Rose (JWU): 1 goal, 3 ground balls

Of Note:
The Wildcats were out-shot 18-7 in the first half – 29-18 overall - as the Cadets got out to a 5-0 lead. Coast Guard added three more goals to start the second half before JWU got on the board.

Marley Medina scored the first of her two goals at the 18:26 mark of the second half. JWU cut the lead to 9-3 on back-to-back goals by Reagan Wildman and Medina.

The Bears answered with four more goals to put the game out of reach.

Coast Guard took advantage of special teams in the first half, scoring a goal when they were down a player then two goals following JWU penalties.

JWU had a 23-19 margin for ground balls, including five by Medina.
