Strong First Half Leads Wildcats to 19-11 Victory over Simmons

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team opened its quest for a third-straight conference title with a strong 19-11 victory over Simmons University on Wednesday evening. 

Johnson & Wales:3-2, GNAC 1-0
Simmons: 2-1, GNAC 1-1

JWU: Ashley Stavalo (W, 1-0) 7 Saves, 11 Goals
SU: Cat Cross (L, 2-1) 5 Saves, 19 Goals

JWU: Dani Lydecker, 5 Goals, 3 Assists
SU: Elena Bragg, 3 Goals, 3 Assists 

Of Note:
Molly Reinhold scored the Sharks the first goal of the contest just 14 seconds after the opening whistle. 

The Wildcats were able to take the lead by going on an impressive 13-0 run. At the helm of that stretch was sophomore Dani Lydecker as she handed out three assists while putting in four goals of her own. Senior, Allison Pazienski contributed four goals in the run. Junior Maria Patane also netted three goals in the half.  

Freshman Brooke Healy registered her first collegiate goal at the 19:27 mark as the Wildcats went into halftime with a 15-3 lead. 

The Sharks came out strong in the second half, going on a 5-0 run that put the Wildcats on their heels. The Wildcats were able to handle the pressure and stay in control. Patane scored her fourth goal of the game 17 minutes into the second half to stop the Simmons' run. 

The Sharks did outscore the Wildcats in the second half, 8-4, but that was not enough to take the victory.  

JWU had a 35-20 advantage in shots and picked up twice as many ground balls, 16-8, as the Sharks.

Next Game:
The Wildcats return to Scott's Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday to take on Rivier University in their first conference game of 2019.
