ORANGE, Calif. – The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team built a second-half lead then held on for victory on Friday. The Wildcats completed their spring break trip out west by defeating Chapman 13-12.
The Panthers scored the first two goals of the game, but the Wildcats answered with a 4-0 run with four different players scoring. Freshman Dani Lydecker scored her third goal of the half with 2:11 remaining to give the Wildcats a 6-5 advantage at the intermission.
Chapman tied the game, 9-9, midway through the second half, but Lydecker and Maria Patane took over during the next seven minutes. The duo scored two goals each in that span to stake JWU to a 13-9 advantage. The Panthers pulled within a goal with five minutes remaining, but the JWU defense only surrendered one shot the rest of the way.
After two goals in each of her first two collegiate games, Lydecker exploded against Chapman for six goals. Patane had a five-point night with four goals and an assist. Rookie goalie Cassidy O'Hara made nine saves.
Johnson & Wales is at home on Thursday to take on Fitchburg State at 4 p.m. in its home opener.
