DARTMOUTH, Mass. – While a lot of the names might be different, the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team can still put up a lot of goals. The Wildcats got the 2018 season started with a 17-12 victory at UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
The two teams went back and forth for much of the first half with UMD pulling within 7-5 with five minutes left in the opening frame. From there, sophomore Maria Patane took over the game.
She scored two goals in the final four minutes of the first half to put JWU up 9-5 then tallied the first three goals of the second half to give JWU an unsurmountable 12-5 lead. Patane ended the game with a career-high seven goals.
Rookie goalie Cassidy O'Hara made 10 saves to get her first collegiate victory. JWU had a 41-28 advantage in shots as well as 24-15 for ground balls.
The Wildcats head west for a pair of games in California over spring break. Johnson & Wales will take on Occidental on Tuesday.
