NASHUA, NH – A great second half at both ends of the field helped the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team win its seventh-straight game. The Wildcats went on the road to defeat Rivier University, 18-6, on Tuesday.
Johnson & Wales: 10-5, 7-1 GNAC
Rivier: 6-10, 3-5 GNAC
The victory gave Johnson & Wales 10 wins on the season. The third year-program has produced double-digit victories in each of the last two seasons.
The hosts scored the first goal just 1:05 into the game, but the Wildcats responded with six goals over the next eight minutes. Johnson & Wales got a pair of goals from Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, RI) and Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, NY) during the run with Knapp's second goal at the 20:18 mark putting JWU up 6-1.
Rivier cut the JWU lead in half, 10-5, with 25:17 to play in the second half, but the Wildcats shut the door with nine-straight goals. Three goals came off the Knapp's stick and rookie Allison Pazienski (New Hyde Park, NY) scored twice.
Five different Wildcats had two or more goals, led by Knapp as she tied a season-high with six goals and added a pair of assists. It was her 13th multi-goal game of the year and she has 11 goals in her last two games. Pederzani and Pazienski each had three goals.
Goalkeeper Cristal Benton (Albany, NY) tied her career-high as she turned away 11 shots. JWU had a 15-8 advantage in draw controls and converted all four of its free position shots.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Emmanuel for a 12 p.m. contest. The winner of that game will be the number two seed in next week's GNAC Tournament.
