PORTLAND, Maine – If there is one team that has been a torn in the side of the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team, it's been St. Joseph's of Maine. The Monks spoiled the Wildcats' GNAC opener as they prevailed 17-8 on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales: 3-4, 0-1 GNAC
St. Joseph's (ME): 6-1, 1-0 GNAC
The host got nearly all the scoring they'd need in the first half. Kat Gadbois scored two of her six goals before Gabrielle Vasile (Milford, Mass.) got JWU on the board at the 17:55 mark of the first half. St. Joseph's answered with five-straight goals until Kathy Ensor (St. Louis, Mo.) found the back of the net with 24 seconds left in the half.
Vasile and Ensor accounted for five of JWU's eight goals. Vasile beat the keeper 40 seconds into the second half then again with 9:12 left in the game. Vasile has scored three goals in back-to-back games for the first time in her career.
Ensor has scored a goal in her last five games, including three games with a pair of tallies. Her second goal at the 15:30 mark pulled JWU within 10-5, but the Wildcats were outscored 7-3 the rest of the game. Johnson & Wales was outshot 23-12 and SJM had a 30-15 advantage in ground balls.
The Wildcats are on the road Tuesday when they take on Westfield State at 7 p.m.
