Clermont, Fla. – The first two games for the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team have been a test for the Wildcats' defense. For the second-straight game the Wildcats faced a top offensive attack as they dropped a 17-5 decision to Capital on Tuesday on the first game of their spring break trip.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-2.
Highlighting the JWU offensive attack was junior midfielder Lydia Knapp (Glen Falls, NY) as she recorded her first hat trick of the season. She tallied the Wildcats' first goal of the game at the 19:47 mark to cut the Capital lead to 2-1. Knapp added goals in the 14th and fifth minutes of the second half.
Junior Kayla Smith (Eastham, Mass.) recorded her first goal of the season when she scored at the 26:35 mark on a free-position shot. The other Johnson & Wales goal was recorded by Marissa Hart (Cohoes, NY) a minute later. Rookie Hannah Litif (Standish, Maine) assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point.
After Knapp's first goal cut the lead in half, the Crusaders responded with five unanswered goals. They added another run of five-straight goals in the second half. Wildcat goalkeeper Cristal Benton (Albany, NY) stopped eight shots.
Johnson & Wales will try to get its first win on Thursday when it takes on St. Vincent at 7 p.m.
