Wildcats Drop Season Opener 16-6 to St. Lawrence

QUEENSBURY, NY - In a effort to get her team to the next level, Johnson & Wales women's lacrosse coach Caitlin Hansen has upped the level of their non-conference schedule. The Wildcats got a taste of what it takes to compete with the top teams in the region as they dropped their season opener 16-6 to St. Lawrence on Friday.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when Gabrielle Vasile (Milford, Mass.) scored in the third minute. Unfortunately, the Saints answered with a goal a minute later and proceeded to score 12-straight unanswered goals. Vasile stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 4:28 mark and Marissa Hart (Cohoes, NY) tallied another right before the break to make it 13-3 at halftime.
The hosts scored three more times to open the half, but JWU responded with a trio of goals to finish the game. Freshman Allison Pazienski (Nee Hyde Park, NY) scored her first collegiate goal at the 16:05 mark then Elizabeth Tonn (Wantagh, NY) scored less than two minutes later.
The final JWU goal came at the 13:32 mark from junior Lydia Knapp (Glen Falls, NY). The midfielder led the Wildcats with three points as she added two assists. The game was play just outside her hometown and her older sister Chloe is a senior on the SLU team. It's the first time the two sisters have played against each other.
Primarily a defender her first two years with the Wildcats, senior Cristal Benton (Albany, NY) made her first collegiate start in goal. She made 11 saves as the Saints outshot the Wildcats 32-13. Johnson & Wales committed 19 turnovers to SLU's 17.
Johnson & Wales heads south for their spring break trip next week. Up first for the Wildcats in Clermont, Fla. is Capital on Tuesday.
