MARSHFIELD, Mass. – When the starting goaltender for the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey was sidelined with an illness, backup Claire Parry was thrusting into the startling role. She made the most of her debut as she was named New England Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Week by the league office.
It's the first award for the Westport, Conn. native and the second for the Wildcats this season. Cassie Wakefield was named Player of the Week on November 4. Norwich swept the other two awards with Amanda Conway getting Player of the Week and Ingrid Holstad-Berge securing Rookie of the Week.
Parry had an impressive weekend in net as she posted a 1.50 goals against average and combined to make 64 saves across both contests. In her first collegiate start on Friday, she made 28 saves as JWU defeated Southern Maine, 2-1. She followed that performance with 36 saves at UMass Boston (including 17 saves in the first period) in a 2-1 loss. The win over USM propelled the Wildcats into a fourth-place tie in the league standings.
The Wildcats are back on the ice Friday as they travel to New England College for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
