Pioneers Too Much for JWU Women's Ice Hockey 7-1

SHELTON, Conn. -- Four second period goals were too much for the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team to overcome on Saturday. The Wildcats lost a 7-1 decision to NCAA Division II Sacred Heart University.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 4-4-1 while SHU improved to 6-8.

The Pioneers scored twice in the opening period, including a power play goal by Olivia Bryant off the first of four assists by Maddie Bishop. Sacred Heart got on the board just 100 seconds into the second period and added another goal a minute later.

JWU avoided the shutout when Cassie Wakefield scored her third goal of the year in the 19th minute of the third period.

Making her collegiate debut in between the pipes was Isabelle Day as she made 25 saves. Also seeing her first action in a JWU uniform was goalie Claire Parry and she made 19 saves.

Johnson & Wales gets back into conference action Friday when it travels to Southern Maine for a 4 p.m. contest.
