PAWTUCKET, R.I. – In a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team fell to Nichols College. The Bison had a 50-22 advantage in shots as they skated their way to 4-1 victory.
Johnson & Wales: 4-3-1
NC: Julia Carroll (W, 1-1-1) 24 Saves
JWU: Jasmine Mucci (L, 4-3-1) 50 Saves
Mel McAleer (NC): 3 Goals, 1 Assist
Koryn Russell (JWU): 1 Goal
The first period was scoreless, mostly because of the efforts of JWU goaltender Jasmine Mucci. She stopped all 24 shots she faced on her way to a career-high 50 saves.
The Bison capitalized 54 seconds into the second period, taking advantage of the power play as Sarah Zeidan scored the first goal on a rebound.
Five minutes later, JWU pulled even with its only goal of the night. Kathryn Mason cleared the puck out of the JWU zone, Koryn Russell caught up to the puck at center ice and scored on the breakaway off a nifty backhanded shot.
However, with five minutes left in the period, Nichols' Mel McAleer scored the first of her three goals on the breakaway to give Nichols the 2-1 lead. She would add a pair of insurance goals in the third period to seal the victory.
The Wildcats return to play Saturday at Sacred Heart for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
