MARSHFIELD, Mass. - For just the second time since joining the New England Hockey Conference last season, a women's ice hockey player was named conference player of the week, announced by the conference office on Monday. North Vancouver native Cassie Wakefield joins Hannah Tracy as the only Wildcats to earn the Player of the Week nod as members of the NEHC.
The senior opened both of the Wildcats non-conference games over the weekend with a goal. In the season opener at Manhattanville, Wakefield was able to bury her shot into the back of the net just 1:08 into the contest to put the Wildcats up a goal early en route to a 3-3 tie. She followed that with a power play goal to tie the score 1-1 just 29 seconds into the third period on Saturday which helped kickstart a four goal period for JWU en route to their first win of the season.
Wakefield and the Wildcats are back in action on Saturday night for their conference home-opener against the Beacons of UMass Boston. Puck drop is slated for 6:45 p.m.
