GORHAM, Maine – A year of firsts continued on Saturday for the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team. The Wildcats screamed past Southern Maine, 5-0, in the NEHC playoffs for the first postseason victory in program history.
Southern Maine: 9-11-6
Johnson & Wales: 10-13-3
USM: Britney Evangelista (L, 5-3-5): 24 Saves, 5 Goals
JWU: Jasmine Mucci (W, 8-11-3), 18 Saves, 0 Goals
Johnson & Wales moves on to the NEHC semifinals. They will face either Norwich or Castleton, pending the outcome of the Suffolk-UMass Boston contest.
In addition to their first playoff victory, the Wildcats gained their 10th win of the season, setting a new program-high.
Kathryn Mason added a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the period. Mason found the back of the net off a pass from Hannah Tracy at 14:41. The duo then struck again five minutes later when Mason put back the rebound of Hanson's shot.
Kawejsza contributed to a pair of third-period insurance goals. She scored her second goal midway through the period then assisted on Cassidy Simanski's power play goal with 1:05 left in the final frame.
The Huskies could not get the puck past Wildcat goaltender Jasmine Mucci, who recorded her second shutout of the season by making 18 saves. The Wildcats held a 29-18 shot advantage.
JWU played both Castleton and Norwich during the final weekend of the regular season. The Wildcats beat the Spartans and lost to the seventh-ranked Cadets.
