MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team picked up a win and a tie over the weekend thanks to strong defense. The last line of defense for the Wildcats was freshman goaltender Jasmine Mucci and she was recognized with New England Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week honors.
It's the first honor for the Arlington, Mass, native and the first for JWU as a new member of the NEHC. Kaleigh Beauregard and Caty Flagg of UMass Boston were recognized as Player and Goaltender of the Week, respectively.
During the weekend series against Becker, Mucci recorded 41 saves. After surrendering the first two goals of the game in Saturday's contest, she buckled down and made 13 saves in the third period and another two in overtime. Mucci followed that with another 18 saves in Sunday's 2-1 overtime win.
Johnson & Wales is on the road this weekend as it travels to Castleton on Friday then takes on fourth-ranked and defending national champion Norwich on Saturday.
