Wildcats Lose 6-4 Shootout at Sacred Heart

SHELTON, Conn. - Sacred Heart had just a little bit too much fire power Friday night  for the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team. The Wildcats dropped a 6-4 decision to the Pioneers.

JWU's record fell to 4-8 while SHU improved to 7-6-1.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals in the fifth, 10th and 15th minutes of the first period. Just before the intermission, the Wildcats got on the board when Julia Martinsson (Charlottenberg, Sweden) scored an unassisted goal at the 18:35 mark.

Martinsson got the scoring started in the second period with a goal in the eighth minute. Cassie Wakefield (North Vancouver, British Columbia) was credited with the assist. Two minutes later, Alexis Harle (Calgary, Alberta) tied the game with her fifth goal of the season.

Unfortunately, Sacred Heart answered with two goals in the final five minutes to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room. Kathryn Mason (Grafton, Mass.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with less than three minutes left in the game.

The Pioneers had more than double the amount of shots as JWU (47-22) with Wildcat goaltender Kami Weiner (Elk Grove Village, I'll.) making 41 saves. Half of SHU's goals came on the power play while JWU was 1-for-2 with the extra skater.

The two teams are back on the ice Saturday at 2 pm.
