Women’s Hockey Loses Close 3-1 Decision to Stevenson

PAWTUCKET, RI --- Two unanswered goals lifted visiting Stevenson University to a 3-1 victory over the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team on Friday.

The loss dropped JWU to 1-3 overall, 0-3 in the Colonial Hockey Conference. The Mustangs improved to 4-1, 3-0 in the league.

Stevenson got on the board first with a power play goal by Monica Pozuc at the 7:05 mark of the first period. Johnson & Wales evened the game in the second period.

Just two and a half minutes into the second frame, sophomore Alexis Harle (Calgary, Albert) scored a short-handed goal to tie the game at 1-1. It's the first short-handed goal in program history.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs took the lead back with a goal by Laura Breninski at the 16:50 mark of the second period. Chelsea Blackburn added an insurance goal in the third period.

JWU goalkeeper Kami Weiner (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) made 40 saves in defeat. SU goalie Caitie Darose stopped 24 of 25 shots.

The two teams are back on the Lynch Arena ice at 4:10 p.m. on Saturday.
