PROVIDENCE, RI -- On the day the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team celebrated its seniors, the trio of Britney Gallagher, Tiondra Hands and Maddy Moro rose to the occasion. The Wildcats locked up a spot in the GNAC Tournament with their 76-39 win over Rivier University on Saturday.
Rivier: 4-18, 0-9 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 12-11, 4-5 GNAC
JWU held the Raiders scoreless for the first five minutes of both the first and second quarters. The Raiders answered in the opening frame, but couldn't keep up in the second stanza as the Wildcats took a 39-23 lead into the locker room.
The Wildcats expanded their lead to as many as 42 in the fourth quarter on Tera-nay Lee layup.
The hosts shut down Rivier on the offensive end of the floor as the visitors were limited to 20 percent shooting.
JWU shot 40.5 percent from the field and made seven three-pointers.
Just missing her career-high was Gallagher as she poured in 25 points. Moro recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Marissa Cottrell had 16 points and Hands rounded out the Wildcats in double figures with 14.
Heather Ries was the only Rivier player in double figures with 14 points and seven boards.
JWU plays its final home game of the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Albertus Magnus at 7 p.m.
