PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team rolled to its fifth win in a row on Thursday. The Wildcats cruised past Pine Manor College, 72-62.
Pine Manor: 1-5
Johnson & Wales: 6-1
The five-game winning streak is the longest since the 2016-17 season when the Wildcats won a school-record 11 in a row.
Johnson & Wales wasted no time in taking control of the game. A Tara Murphy jumper made it 14-4 in JWU's favor midway through the opening quarter. JWU continued to play well on both ends of the floor, taking a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.
JWU went cold on the offensive end at the beginning of the second quarter and that allowed the Gators to get back into the game. Ladaeja Robinson made a layup with 2:16 left in the half to cut the JWU lead to 37-31. Another Murphy field goal gave the hosts a 43-33 halftime margin.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats played better on both ends of the floor as they pushed the lead to as many as 19 (65-46) on a pair of Marissa Cottrell free throws.
JWU dominated the glass with a 62-37 rebounding advantage. Five different players grabbed six or more rebounds, led by Maddy Moro who came off the bench to produce game highs of 20 points and 14 board. Cottrell just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
More than half of the Gators' points came from the duo of Mandy Mastropasqua and Kierra Jackson. Mastropasqua notched a team-high 17 points while Jackson had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.
The Wildcats play their third home game of the week Saturday when they host Brandeis at 1 p.m.
