WINTHROP, Mass. – With last week's game at Rivier hanging in the balance, Johnson & Wales University women's basketball student-athlete Dede Stevenson came up big for her team. Her efforts last week earned her GNAC Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office.
It's the second weekly honor for the Hartford, Conn., native to go along with her initial award on December 3. Shyla Osmond from Albertus Magnus collected Player of the Week.
Stevenson averaged 19 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting an impressive 46 percent from the floor. In the win at Rivier, she registered 16 points, five rebounds and four assists and connected on a late three-pointer to put JWU ahead, 84-83, before knocking down four-straight free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory. She followed up with a career-high 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point range at Suffolk.
Johnson & Wales gets back into conference action Thursday when it hosts Saint Joseph (Conn.) at 7 p.m.
