PROVIDENCE, RI – The last month the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team has been on the verge of getting into the win column, but couldn't put a full game together. The Wildcats snapped a 10-game losing streak by starting GNAC action with a 61-56 win over Norwich on Tuesday.
Norwich: 5-7, 0-1 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 2-12, 1-0 GNAC
JWU dug itself an early hole as the Cadets got out to a 7-0 start. The Wildcats found their way offensively and took a 10-8 lead on a Tiondra Hands three-pointer at the 2:06 mark. Norwich went into the locker room with a 26-22 advantage.
Neither team was able to establish a lead bigger than three points in the second half until Dede Stevenson made a three-pointer to give JWU a 58-54 edge with 1:54 to play.
The game featured 17 lead changes and eight ties.
Tying for the game-high was Ally Mishol with 17 points and she just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Britney Gallagher chipped in 13 points – including two free throws in the final minute to seal the victory – and Stevenson added 11.
Equaling Mishol's point production was Norwich's Emily Oliver with 17 points while Vanessa Fluery was only two points back.
Johnson & Wales is back at home on Thursday to take on Colby-Sawyer at 5:30 p.m.
