NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team jumped on host Albertus Magnus from the start and never looked back. The Wildcats won their third game in a row with a 75-61 defeat of the Falcons on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales: 11-7, 7-3 GNAC
Albertus Magnus: 11-9, 6-5 GNAC
Albertus Magnus pulled within 7-5 on a Liz Falcigno three pointer at the 6:26 mark of the first quarter. JWU finished the opening stanza on a 10-1 run that included five points from Kimberly Viafara (Woodside, NY). The lead got as high as 21, 31-10, in the second quarter and the Falcons pulled within 65-55 in the fourth quarter but couldn't get the margin under double digits.
JWU had four players in double figures, led by 19 from Ashley Thompson (Bellingham, Mass.). She added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year to go along with five steals. Also getting a double-double, her first of the year, was Viafara as she came off the bench to score 15 points and snag 11 rebounds. Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, RI) produced 17 points and seven assists and Sarah Duryea (Middle Village, NY) added 12 points.
The Wildcats made 10 more baskets than the Falcons, 29-19, and had an 85.7-67.9 shooting advantage at the free throw line. JWU also had a 46-35 margin in rebounds and scored 21 points off 16 AMC turnovers.
Johnson & Wales is back home to face Mount Ida at 7 p.m. on Tuesday
