BOSTON – A last-second layup did in the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team in its GNAC opener at Suffolk. The Wildcats dropped a 61-60 decision to the Rams on Wednesday.

Suffolk: 4-4, 1-1 GNAC
Ashley Thompson (Bellingham, Mass.) put JWU up 59-54 – its largest lead of the game - on a jumper with 2:49 remaining. The Rams tied the game with 21 seconds left then Thompson hit one of two free throws to give the Wildcats a 61-60 lead. Alexandra Clarke made a layup with just 2.8 seconds left on the clock to give the hosts the victory.
Thompson led all players with 26 points and added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Guard Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, RI) was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 13 points. Kimberly Viafara (Woodside, NY) came off the bench to score six points and grab six rebounds.
The two teams were evenly matched with Suffolk holding a slight advantage in shooting (37.9-to-37.0 percent) and rebounding (39-36). Johnson & Wales did have the advantage in free throws (16-of-21 to 12-of-19).
The Wildcats are back at home to take on UMass Dartmouth Tuesday at 6 p.m.
