BIDDEFORD, Maine – A back-and-forth game, unfortunately, went against the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team in the final minute as JWU dropped its season opener. The Wildcats lost 58-55 to Regis at the UNE Tournament.

Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, RI) made a pair of free throws to extended JWU's lead to 55-52 with 1:23 remaining in the game. Pederzani led the Wildcats with 19 points to go along with seven steals and a pair of assists.
The Pride's Brittany Stone answered by hitting a pair of baskets, including a layup with 34 seconds left, to give Regis the lead for good. The game featured 10 ties and seven lead changes.
Pederzani was one of three Wildcats to score in double figures. Bobbie Whitehead (Brooklyn, NY) recorded a double-double as she scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Ashley Thompson (Bellingham, Mass.) chipped in 12 points. All 55 of JWU's points came from its starting five.
Johnson & Wales made a living on the offensive glass, holding a 22-12 advantage in offensive rebounds that JWU converted into 16 second-chance points. The two teams were evenly matched, though Regis did shoot 10 percent better from the field (40.4-to-30.3 percent). RC was 13-of-18 from the free throw line, compared to 4-of-6 by JWU.
Johnson & Wales will try to get its first win of the season on Saturday when it takes on the University of Maine at Farmington at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
