BOSTON, Mass. – Late-inning heroics propelled the Johnson & Wales University softball team to a GNAC doubleheader sweep at Simmons. The Wildcats took the first game, 3-2, then rallied to win the nightcap, 4-3.
Simmons: 10-20, 4-2 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 13-11, 5-1 GNAC
JWU did all of its damage in game one during the fifth inning. Kayla McKinnon got a one-out single then scored on a Devin Scales' home run. A pair of two-out singles got a runner in scoring position then Brenna DuPerry delivered a single to plate pinch runner Gabby Farino.
Simmons got one back in the fifth and another in the sixth. JWU starter Kristin Frost got out of the sixth then Saxon Bresnahan threw a scoreless seventh for her first save of the year. Frost collected the victory by giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits with three strikeouts.
JWU spotted the Sharks a 3-0 lead after three innings before starting its comeback.
Scales delivered again in the sixth inning of game two as she cranked a double to left field that plated McKinnon and Ally Mishol.
In the seventh, Meghan Gavin produced a two-out single to score Megan Antaya. Mishol followed with an infield single then Zoe Jennings helped her own cause with a single up the middle that allowed Gavin to score.
Jennings came on in the third and threw five scoreless innings to pick up the victory. She worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth then threw a one-two-three seventh inning.
The Wildcats return home to face Albertus Magnus Sunday in a 12 pm doubleheader
