NEW HAVEN, Conn. --- Five runs in the seventh inning of game two helped the Johnson & Wales University softball team stave off a sweep at Albertus Magnus College on Saturday. The Wildcats lost game one, 1-0, then bounced back to take the nightcap, 6-5.
Albertus Magnus: 17-8, 12-2 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 17-8, 14-2 GNAC
Trailing 5-1 going into the seventh, shortstop Brenna DuPerry led off with a walk. She moved up to second on a Meghan Gavin single then scored on a Tiffani Semanchik single. After Jennifer Corona was walked, designated player Katie Rufo doubled home Gavin and Semanchik. First baseman Kayla McKinnon singled to plate pinch runners Julie Saliba and Shari Minalga.
JWU had runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings of game one, but couldn't push a run across. The bases were loaded in the third with one out but the go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate twice.
Semanchik ran her hitting streak to 18 games. She had a leadoff double in the sixth inning of game one then collected a pair of hits in the nightcap.
JWU's doubleheader at Salve Regina on Sunday has been postponed until May 1. JWU is back on the field Tuesday at MIT for a 3 p.m. twinbill.
