FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Home runs and strong pitching was the Johnson & Wales University softball team's recipe for success on Tuesday. The Wildcats took a doubleheader at Framingham State, winning 5-1 and 9-3.
Framingham State: 6-8
Johnson & Wales: 5-6
The long ball helped the Wildcats in the opener. Leading 1-0 in the fifth, shortstop Brenna DuPerry ripped a two-run home run to score Kristin Frost. Tiffani Semanchik followed with the second of her three hits to score Meghan Gavin. Katie Rufo smacked a two-out home run in the seventh.
Five runs were plenty for starter Jennifer Corona to record her second win in a row. She worked 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Johnson & Wales was down 3-1 in game two before the bats came alive in the fourth. Saxon Bresnahan had a sacrifice fly then Ally Mishol drew a bases loaded walk. In the fifth, Rufo cleared the bases with her second home run of the day, scoring Semanchik and Gavin.
Gavin, Kayla McKinnon and Frost had a pair of hits. Rufo and Mishol drove in three runs each. Frost came on in fourth to throw four scoreless innings with six strikeouts to pick up her first victory of the year.
The Wildcats are back in conference action on Thursday as they welcome Suffolk for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The game was postponed from Sunday.
