CLERMONT, Fla. – Timely hitting gave the Johnson & Wales University softball team a doubleheader sweep on the first day of the season. The Wildcats defeated Neumann 7-4 in the opener then needed eight innings to take game two, 2-1.
Johnson & Wales: 2-0
Three runs in the top of the fifth inning of game one gave the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish. The first hit of freshman Kristin Frost's (Pearl City, Hawaii) collegiate career was a two-run single to score pinch runners Sheyann Goodwin (Tacoma, Wash.) and Kayla McKinnon (Cambridge, Mass.).
Pitcher Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, NY) helped her own cause with a two-out RBI as part of her 2-4 performance at the plate. She pitched a complete game, striking out seven and giving up four runs. Diana Amendolara (Newtown, Pa.) started the scoring in the sixth with a solo home run.
Pinch hitter Emily Schaper (Pompton Lakes, NJ) jacked her first home run of the season to tie game two in the bottom of the fifth. Using the international tiebreaker, Alex Fantasia (Framingham, Mass.) was put on second base and she scored the winning run on a Meghan Gavin (Wallingford, Conn.) sacrifice fly.
JWU is back on the diamond Wednesday when it plays Wartburg at 9:00 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest with Hanover.
