BRISTOL, R.I. – The 2017 campaign kicked off Saturday for the Johnson & Wales University cross country teams at the Roger Williams Invitational, held at Colt State Park.
The men finished sixth on the 5k course, posting 168 points. Bridgewater State won the event with 24 points. The women amassed 157 points to take eighth during the two-mile race. Salve Regina claimed the women's title with a total of 70 points.
Newcomer Cole Geraghty was the first JWU runner across the line in 17:21 to take 12th. Senior David Sherman (Yarmouthport, Mass.) placed 27th with a time of 17:55. Junior Alex Nathan (Beachwood, Ohio) crossed in 20:55. Rounding out the JWU contingency was Nick Pereira (Franklin, Mass.) at 21:44 and Joshua Johnson posted a time of 26:10.
A pair of newcomers led the women's team with top 20 finishes. Victoria Barlow took 12th in 13:11 while Kaylan Dunham was only three seconds behind in 18th place. Senior Mary Kelly (Wheaton, Ill.) came in at 14:03 and classmate Alison King (San Diego, Calif.) recorded a time of 14:12. Sophomore Hannah Blossom (Paoli, Pa.) posted a time of 15:10 while newcomer Kala Lavallee finished in 15:18.
Johnson & Wales is back on the course next Saturday when it travels to the Trinity Invitational.
