DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Facing its toughest competition to date, the Johnson & Wales University cross country teams ran at the 44th Annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational. The men posted a score of 528 to take 18th place while the women came in tied for 28th.
The men ran their first 8k race of the season and came in just behind UMass Maritime while finishing ahead of Castleton. Continuing his strong senior season was Adam Sachs (Ellicott City, Md.) as he posted a top-10 finish with his time of 25:32.67, which was faster than his best time last year.
Having one of his best meets was Alex Melnick (Port Jervis, NY) as he posted a time of 27:54.50 that was faster than any of his 2015 races. Also surpassing his best time from last year was Brandon Au (Oxford, Conn.) as he was next across the line in 28:05.90. Rounding out the JWU scores was Josh Letendre (East Providence, RI) at 29:35.00 and Mike Jones (Wallkill, NY) crossed the line in 32:29.29.
The women came in tied with crosstown rival Rhode Island College. Newcomers Mary Kelly (Wheaton, Ill.) and Ciera Gross (Blairstown, NJ) continued to lead the team. Both runners posted a season-best times as Kelly was the first JWU runner across the line in 21:07.92 while Gross was close behind at 21:30.40.
Right on their tails was Oliva Molokwu (Malden, Mass.) in 21:40.32 while Kellie Graf (Ballston Lake, NY) came in at 22:07.32 and Taniecia Anderson (Mount Vernon, NY) posted a time of 23:02.94 to finish up the JWU scorers. All three times are season-best for 2016.
Up next for the Wildcats is the Elms Invitational on September 24 at Chicopee Memorial State Park.
