Cross Country Open Season At Roger Williams Invite

BRISTOL, RI – The 2016 season began for the Johnson & Wales University men's and women's cross country teams at the Roger Williams Invitational, held on a 5k course at Colt State Park. Led by a fifth-place finish by senior Adam Sachs, the men placed sixth as a unit. The women's team took 11th.

The men had three runners in the top 25 as part of their 146-point total. JWU finished just seven points behind host Roger Williams. The women scored 289 points.

Sachs (Ellicott City, Md.) just missed out on a top-three finish with his time of 16:30.28. Also cracking the top 25 were seniors Brandon Au (Oxford, Conn.) and Alex Melnick (Port Jervis, NY) at 17:51.08 and 17:51.83, respectively. Rounding out the top five was junior David Sherman (Yarmouthport, Mass.) in 30th at 17:57.67 and Josh Letendre's (East Providence, RI) time of 19:36.74 to take 72nd.

Crossing the line first for the women with a time of 22:18.58 to take 43rd was freshman Ciera Gross (Blairstown, NJ). She was followed by Mary Kelly (Wheaton, Ill.) in 58th at 23:02.02 and in 62nd place was Allison King (San Diego, Calif.) at 23:09.81. Right behind her was Oliva Molokwu (Malden, Mass.) at 23:11.12 to take 63rd and Melissa Connelly (Hammonton, NJ) completed the top five in 101st with her time of 25:14.57.
