PROVIDENCE, RI – Strong defense led the Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team to a GNAC victory on Tuesday. The Wildcats downed Emerson College, 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-20).
Emerson: 9-8, 1-6 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 15-8, 4-3 GNAC
It was a mixed bag as the Wildcats won a close first set, blew out the Lions in the second set and rallied from behind in the third set.
JWU had the lead up to four in the first set, but the Lions pulled within 23-21 on a JWU error. Emerson returned the favor with an error then Sanjae Holloway got a kill on set point.
Jason Rhee went on an eight-point service run in set two to build a 17-7 advantage. The Wildcats hit .500 in the second stanza.
JWU was down 7-1 in the third before working its way back into the set and going on to the victory.
The Wildcats had 47-33 digs advantage as well as an 8-3 blocking advantage. That limited Emerson to a -.010 hitting percentage while JWU was at a .283 rate.
Rookie setter Ben Sandt recorded his second double-double of the year with 20 assists and 10 digs.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Thursday to take on Emmanuel at 7 p.m.
