PROVIDENCE, RI – The JWU Invitational ended on a high note for the Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team. The Wildcats wrapped up the tournament by taking down Baruch 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22).
Johnson & Wales: 3-5
JWU built a comfortable lead in the first set, only to see the Bearcats get back within 21-18. A pair of Kanila Chang kills allowed the Wildcats to pull away. A 9-3 second-set lead nearly evaporated, however JWU responded to take a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back errors put JWU in a 21-19 third set hole, but four blocks helped the Wildcats win the match.
Sophomore setter Endel Sanchez did a good job of distributing the offense as five different players had five or more kills, topped by Sanjae Holloway's eight. He also had nine digs and three blocks. Sanchez recorded his second double-double in a row with 25 assists and a team-high 10 digs. Chang produced seven kills and six blocks.
Johnson & Wales' prowess at the net defensively was the difference in the match. The Wildcats notched 18 blocks, led by middle blockers Zach Turner and Donovan Kelley with nine and eight rejections, respectively. That gave JWU a .144 to -.028 hitting advantage.
Johnson & Wales goes on the road Tuesday to take on Endicott at 6 p.m.
