PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team has hung in with the six ranked opponents it's played this season, but hasn't been able to get over the hump for an upset. The Wildcat fell 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 21-25) to No. 13 Rivier on Wednesday.
Johnson & Wales: 7-8, 1-2 GNAC
Rivier: 4-5, 1-0 GNAC
The Wildcats pulled within 22-20 on a Kanila Chang (Orlando, Fla.) kill. However, the Raiders got a pair of kills and a JWU error to take the opening set. The third set was back and forth with nine ties and six lead changes. Johnson & Wales shrank the margin to 22-20, but Rivier was able to close the match with a pair of kills.
Nearly half of the Wildcats' 27 kills came from Chang and he had 12 winners to go along with five digs. Matt LaVasseur (Salem, NH) was next with five kills. Setter Cameron Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) notched 24 assists and six digs as well as a team-high three blocks.
JWU has a pair of matches on Saturday, first a conference game at #5 Wentworth at 11 a.m., followed by Newbury College at 1 p.m.
