WINTHROP, Mass. – On the heels of the program's ninth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title, the Johnson & Wales men's soccer team was well represented on the All-GNAC team announced Monday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Nick Gutekunst (East Northport, N.Y.) and senior defender Riley McNicholas (Hopkinton, N.H.) were named to the All-GNAC first team, while sophomore Kevin Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) and junior defender Joulien Martinelli (Cranston, R.I.) earned second team honors. Junior goalkeeper Austin Scoggin (Cutchogue, N.Y.) represented the Wildcats on the third team. Sixth year head coach David Kulik was named the GNAC Coach of the Year by his peers for the second time in his career.
Registering a career year with 13 goals and 34 points, Gutekunst led the GNAC in assists, while connecting on four game-winning goals, including two against conference foes. A two-time GNAC player of the week, the Long Island native scored the game-winner just before half-time in a tight 4-2 road victory over Emmanuel College. His first game-winner came a week prior in a 2-0 road win over Rivier.
Named to the All-GNAC first team for the first time in his career, McNicholas played an integral role in helping the Wildcats capture its first conference title since 2015. Recording three goals and an assist for seven points on the season, the New Hampshire native registered the game-winner in a 2-0 road win over Albertus Magnus, scoring 15 minutes into the game on a pass from JP Rioux.
A successful sophomore season consisting of tallying three goals and an assist for seven points, secured a spot for Reilly on the All-GNAC second team for the first time. Midway through the season, the New Jersey native recorded a career single-game best finding the back of the net twice in a 10-0 victory over Anna Maria. Additionally, Reilly was also named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Martinelli helped anchor a Wildcat defense in 2019 that was ranked 21st in the nation in shutouts and 22nd in goals-against average. In fitting fashion, the Wildcats collected its 12th shutout of the season in its 1-0 double-overtime victory over Saint Joseph's (ME) in the title match on Saturday afternoon.
Rounding out the Wildcats on the All-GNAC team, Scoggin was selected to the third team after leading the conference with seven shutouts, including four against GNAC opponents. Earlier this season, the Long Island native captured GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week honors after battling Saint Joseph's (ME) to a 0-0 tie on Oct. 26 and snapping a four-game winless streak against the Monks.
