Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team took on the weather as well as conference rival Lasell College on Wednesday. The match started with normal fanfaire but quickly changed as a storm with high winds and large amounts of percipitation decended upon the Scotts Miracle Gro Athletic Complex. Both teams made good on a tough environment, however in the end the Wildcats took the 3-1 decision.
Lasell: 1-10 (0-4 GNAC)
Johnson & Wales: 8-2 (3-0 GNAC)
JP Rioux (JWU) : 2 goals
Jake Ouellette (LU) : 1 goal
Austin Sweeney (JWU) : 1 assist
LU: Nick Pappas (L, 0-1) 4 saves
JWU: Austin Scoggin (W, 6-2) 2 saves
Dark clouds framed the Scotts Miracle Gro Athletic Complex as the match got under way. As both teams eased into the play, Lasell's Jake Ouellette launched a strike from a pass footed by Francisco Villacorta that beat Austin Scoggin before a minute would complete.
Lasell's one goal lead would hold for four minutes until JP Rioux scored his first unassisted goal at the five minute mark. With the score tied at one, the winds and rain came.
With winds that changed the trajectory of goal kicks, Lasell and JWU battled to a stand still. The one goal lock was broken in the second half when Riley Spotton finished a penelty kick at bottom right corner of the goal in the 46th minute. JP Rioux would also place a beautiful goal, from a very difficult angle, to the top right shelf of the frame in the 51st minute to secure the conference win.
Through a near constant downpour and high winds, the Wildcats were able to get 11 shots off to the Lasers 3 and own the corner advantage 4 to 2.
The Wildcats travel to New Hampshire on Satuday to face fellow conference opponent Colby-Sawyer for a 1 p.m. start.
