Gutekunst Breaks Tie for Kulik's 100th Win

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team played gracious host to fellow Providence localled Rhode Island College on Wednesday.  As the gritty match unfolded, both teams held ground and had few opportunities to increase the ledger on their behalf.  Johnson & Wales would claim the final advantage on a late goal to hand JWU Head Men's Soccer Coach David Kulik his 100th victory as skipper of the Wildcats. In Kulik's eighth year at the helm, JWU has amassed an impressive 100-35-18 record.

Rhode Island College: 3-4-1 (0-1 LEC)

Johnson & Wales: 5-2 (1-0 GNAC)

Statistical Leaders:

JP Rioux (JWU) : 1 goal

Axel Ortega (RIC) : 1 goal

Nick Gutekunst (JWU) : 1 goal

RIC: Charlie Tashjian (L, 2-4-1) 5 saves

JWU: Austin Scoggin (W, 5-2) 2 saves

Of Note:

As the clock began to tick down to start the match, JP Rioux sent a shot to the back corner of the goal with a quick pass sent to him from Garrett Groeling at the 55 seconds mark to launch the Wildcats to the 1-0 lead that would stay the entire half.

Physicality and defense were on the menu for both teams in the second half as control was hard to come by and clean attempts at the box were rare.  It all changed in the 64th minute when a shot glanced off of Austin Scoggin and was captilized on by Axel Ortega which equalized the match.

With less then three minutes left in regular time, Nick Gutekunst landed the game-winner from Alexander Pane.  The attempt was partially stopped by the RIC keeper, however, the spin of the ball pushed the sphere over the line and the game went to the Wildcats.

JWU dominated the corner attempts 10 to 2, while the shots were also in the Wildcat's favor 11 to 6.

Next Game:

The Wildcats travel to Nashua, NH to take on conference rival Rivier University on Friday.
