Bridgewater, Mass – The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 3- 0 win over Bridgewater State on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats landed all of their scoring in the first half and held stout in the second to secure the finish.

Johnson & Wales opened the scoring in the eighth minute on an own goal off a corner kick. A Bridgewater State defender tried to clear the ball off the line and his attempt deflected in off a teammate.
Five minutes later, the Wildcats made it a 2-0 game on a header goal from inside the six by sophomore midfielder Nick Gutekunst. Freshman midfielder Szymon Gawlick and senior forward Erik Schneider assisted on the marker which came off a restart.
Freshman forward Garrett Groeling marked his first career goal, pushing the Wildcat lead to 3-0, in the 35th minute with Gutekunst picking up the assist. Gutekunst slipped a pass between two BSU defenders and Groeling beat the keeper with a shot inside the left post from 14 yards out.
The Wildcats won the shot battle 9-4, while also holding the advantage in corners 3-1.
The Wildcats are on the road on Wednesday when they visit Wheaton for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
