PROVIDENCE, RI – For the second time in three days, the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team battled to an overtime victory. Senior Riley McNicholas tallied his second overtime goal in as many games as the Wildcats defeated the Lyons, 2-1, on Sunday.
Wheaton (Mass.): 1-1
Johnson & Wales: 2-0
Just as they did on Friday in the season opener, rookie JP Rioux sent in a corner kick to the box that McNicholas deflected into the goal.
The first half was a defensive struggle as neither team could find the back of the net despite several good opportunities. JWU had a 15-11 advantage in shots, including 8-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Wildcats were the first to get on the board when Rioux's shot from 25 yards out in the 79th minute was deflected just enough to get over the outstretched arms of the Wheaton goalie. In the 88th minute, Wheaton scored the equalizer when Adam Waks found the ball in the middle of a scrum and poked it into the net.
Wheaton nearly got the game-winner a minute later, but JWU goalkeeper Nicholas Mancini reeled in a Curran Wait's header at the goal line.
The Wildcats return to the pitch Wednesday when Coast Guard comes to Providence for a 7 p.m. start.
