PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It looked like Sunday's GNAC men's soccer quarterfinal game between Johnson & Wales University and Albertus Magnus was going to be a high-scoring affair. After JWU got on the board in the first three minutes, both defenses tightened up as the Wildcats came away with a 1-0 victory.
The win improved Johnson & Wales to 15-1-2 and the Falcons end the year at 7-10-1. The Wildcats - ranked 10th in the NCAA regional poll - ran their unbeaten streak to 15 games and have only surrendered four goals during that time.
JWU will take on Norwich at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the semifinals. Last year the Cadets knocked the Wildcats out of the tournament.
Johnson & Wales had plenty of opportunities for an insurance goal, holding a 20-6 advantage in shots. The Falcons also had good scoring chances as a pair of their shots hit the crossbar. AMC goalkeeper Joe Russo made seven saves while Nicholas Mancini (Toms River, NJ) only had to make one stop to pick up the win and record his 11th shutout.
