PAXTON, Mass. – A pair of first half goals were all the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team would need for victory on Friday. Freshmen Jason Cruz and Riley Spotton scored to lift the Wildcats to a 2-0 triumph at Anna Maria.
Johnson & Wales: 10-3-4, 6-2-1 GNAC
Anna Maria: 2-12-1, 1-7-1 GNAC
For the fifth year in a row – corresponding with the arrival of head coach Dave Kulick for 2012 season – the Wildcats have won at least 10 games. JWU has won 67 matches during Kulik's tenure.
In the fifth minute, sophomore Andrew Vecere (Wayne, NJ) slid a pass to rookie Jason Cruz (Providence, RI) and Cruz scored from 20 yards out. It's his third game-winning goal of the year, which is the most on the team.
Senior Xavier Carty (Mt. Vernon, NY) set up the second goal in the final minute of the first half. His pass from the left wing found Riley Spotton (Ronkonkoma, NY) and he redirected it into the goal for the first score of his collegiate career.
Johnson & Wales had ample opportunities to score in the second half as it out-shot the hosts 20-2 as part of a 31-7 advantage. JWU goalkeeper Jon Robbins (Berkley Heights, NJ) only had to make a pair of saves to get his seventh victory and fifth shutout.
The Wildcats are currently second in the GNAC standings. If Norwich loses at Albertus Magnus on Saturday, JWU will hold on to the number two seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. A Norwich victory or tie and JWU will be the number three seed.
Johnson & Wales has one final game before next Saturday's GNAC first round contest. The Wildcats travel across town on Tuesday to take on Rhode Island College at 4 p.m.
