NEWPORT, RI – Looking to get back in the win column after a weekend setback, the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team went on the road Tuesday at Salve Regina. Senior Xavier Carty scored in the 78th minute to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory over the Seahawks.
Johnson & Wales: 6-2-4
Salve Regina: 2-7-1
Johnson & Wales got on the board first when Teagan Drake (Waterbury, Vt.) drove home the first goal in the 43rd minute. It's his second goal in the last three games.
Less than five minutes in the second half, Salve Regina tied the game with a goal by Jared Warren. On the verge of overtime, Carty (Mt. Vernon, NY) sent the Wildcats home a winner with a goal at the 77:53 mark. It was his team-leading sixth goal of the season and the fifth game-winning goal of his career.
Both teams were on the attack offensively as Johnson & Wales held a 20-18 advantage in shots, including 15-7 on net. The 15 shots on goal are a season high for the Wildcats.
JWU goalkeeper Jon Robbins (Berkley Heights, NJ) turned away five of six shots to get the victory. SRU's Michael Payan made 12 saves in defeat.
JWU gets back into GNAC action on Saturday when it takes on Mount Ida at 12 p.m.
