Last Second Goal Dooms Wildcats

PORTLAND, Maine -- A goal in the closing second by host St. Joseph's of Maine handed the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team its first GNAC loss of the season. The Monks won 2-1 on Saturday.  

Records:
Johnson & Wales: 5-2-4, 2-1-1 GNAC
St. Joseph's (Me.): 8-1-2, 4-0-0 GNAC

Of Note:
St. Joe's got on the board first with a goal in the 10th minute. It took 60 minutes, but JWU got the equalizer when sophomore Riley McNicholas (Hopkinton, NH) scored his first goal of the year.  

The teams appeared to be heading to overtime, but Brett Mattos scored with one second left to give SJM the win. It's JWU's first loss to a conference opponent - a string of 12 games - since falling to Mt. Ida on September 26, 2015. 

Each team got off 12 shots and the Wildcats had an 8-4 advantage for shots on goal but SJM keeper Blake Mullen came up with six saves. 

Up Next:
JWU travels to Salve Regina on Tuesday for a 3:30 pm start before returning home to host Mount Ida at 12 pm on Saturday.
