PROVIDENCE – Three first half goals got the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team on the winning track as it started conference action on Saturday. Xavier Carty scored two of the goals as Johnson & Wales rolled to a 4-0 victory over Rivier in the GNAC opener for both teams.
Rivier: 0-2, 0-1 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 3-1, 1-0 GNAC
Coming into the weekend, Johnson & Wales had only scored three goals in its first three games. Freshman Jason Cruz (Providence, RI) opened the scoring in the 19th minute with the first goal of his collegiate goal. Twelve minutes later Andrew Vecere (Wayne, NJ) sent in a pass from the wing that Teagan Drake (Waterbury, Vt.) deposited in the back of the net.
Carty (Mt. Vernon, NY) put the game out of reach with goals on both sides of halftime. With seconds remaining in the first half, he collected the ball in front of the net and sent towards the goal. Rivier keeper Collin Deyarmin took his eyes off the ball and allowed it to roll between his legs and into the goal. For Carty it was the second multi-goal game of his JWU career after a hat trick against Suffolk in last year's GNAC Tournament.
Alex Armstrong and Michael Russo each had two shots on goal for Rivier, but they were all turned away by JWU goalkeeper Nicholas Mancini (Toms Rivier, NJ). The junior has only give up one goal with 22 saves in 356.47 minutes of action.
Johnson & Wales is back on the pitch Sunday when it plays host to Wentworth at 1 p.m.
