MIDDLETOWN, R.I.. - The Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse team fell to the Salve Regina University, Seahawks, 21-10, in the 2020 season opener. The Wildcats' offense was sparked by junior Matt Gelb as well as hat tricks from a pair of second-year attackmen.
Salve Regina: 3-0
Johnson & Wales: 0-1
Gelb scored JWU's first goal of the 2020 season as he tied the game at 1-1. Tyler Drago followed with a goal less than five minutes later, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. JWU had three man-up opportunities in the first quarter but were unsuccessful on all-three attempts.
Seahawks started the second quarter strong, scoring three-straight goals within 5:20. Andrew Vasile stopped the scoring run by scoring his first collegiate goal at the 8:22 mark.
Salve Regina scored three more unanswered goals until Michael Celentano scored on a man-up opportunity to cut the lead to 11-6 at the half.
The Seahawks held the advantage in shots, 60-32, and groundballs, 38-17. The Wildcats won the turnover battle, 14-7.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Saturday to take on Wheaton College at 4 p.m.
