The men's lacrosse squad dropped a 12-3 decision against UMass Boston in a non-conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon. It marked the first game as a varsity program for the Wildcats.
Sophomore Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.) tallied four goals and added an assist for UMass Boston while junior John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) had a pair of goals with two assists in the win for the Beacons. Senior Keegan Donaher (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched a goal and added an assist in the setback for JWU.
UMass Boston raced out to the early 3-0 advantage after the first period. The Beacons went up 4-0 on a goal from sophomore Nick Weiss (Westfield, Mass.) just 2:49 into the second stanza. Johnson & Wales responded, however and used a pair of unassisted goals by Donaher and sophomore Tyler Thompson (West Chester, Pa.) to cut the lead to 4-2 midway through the second period. UMass Boston then extended their lead to 6-2 with two goals less than a minute apart and took the four goal lead heading into halftime.
The visiting Beacons controlled the action in the second half, including three goals by Ellis en route to the 12-3 victory.
Junior Jack Pettine (Foxboro, Mass.) made seven stops and senior Mike Russo (Chelmsford, Mass.) had six saves in the loss for JWU. Sophomore Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) made 13 saves in the win for UMass Boston.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 0-1 on the season while UMass Boston improves to 1-0. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, March 5th when they host Salve Regina in a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m.
